“Eslabón de Vuelta de Obligado”: The links are inspired by the iron chains of this Battle

Material: Black wicker and bronze

Material origin:Delta del Río Paraná

Technique: Basket weaving

Description:

“EVO Chains” is an installation of three large-scale, intertwined chains in black wicker. E.V.O. stands for “Eslabón (Chains) of Vuelta de Obligado”.
Their links are inspired by those of the iron chains of the Battle of the same name, which were submerged in the Paraná River to prevent the invasion of the colonial Anglo-French in Buenos Aires in 1845.
Ten years later, the first wicker stick was planted in the Paraná Delta, leading to the development of creole basketmaking.
This was learnt by many newly-settled immigrants, including my great-uncle who arrived in 1920 from Spain and embraced the craft.

The iron chains used in the Battle of Vuelta de Obligado, submerged in the Paraná River in 1845 to prevent the colonial invasion by the Anglo-French fleet.
