Description:

This project is based on research into wicker and its workers in the Delta of Tigre, carried out during the spring of 2018 at the URRA Residency.
“La isla,” as it is commonly called, is in fact a group of islands known as the Delta del Río Paraná, considered one of the largest in the world.
Its unique microclimate fosters the proliferation of various plant and animal species, as well as a rich cultural identity.
The first wicker was planted in 1850 and quickly became an important agricultural activity in the area.
Due to political and economic decisions during the 1990s, the activity declined drastically, and many families had to leave the islands.
For two months, I traveled through the remaining plantations with the families who still work them.
I learned to weave with local artisans and built an installation inspired by two architectural elements: an I-beam and a column.
The works aim to highlight the wicker workers’ leisure, their history in the Delta, their working processes, and their precarious labor conditions.
Ocupación: Canastero ("Occupation: Basketmaker") is what appeared on the personal ID of my mother’s great-uncle, born in 1882 in La Coruña and later raised in the Delta, within the wicker-making trade.
